Melissa Kulhanek

Melissa was born in Prague, Czech Republic. She grew up surrounded by music, literature, poetry and arts. Though under heavy political censorship, there were always ways to sneak in works of literature, film or drama. She attended poetry and book readings, recitation and drawing classes. Melissa studied fashion design and illustration, and eventually moved to Canada where she attended Ontario College of Arts, while working as a fashion illustrator for a studio, as well as freelancing. Melissa helped to establish several theatrical groups (Street Theatre, Classical Stage Productions, as well as children’s theatre.) She has a tremendous following at a writer’s forum where she contributes on a regular basis. Her poems have appeared in “Artella.”

Stars in Midnight Blue | A Lesser God

Stars in Midnight Blue

Your silence hurts.
Behind my eyes
stars
in the midnight blue sky,
explode
into head injuries.
Not a word,
not a whisper.
Ice cold fingers
touch my forehead,
touch me all over.
I submerge
into my dark-blue world,
blaming the misty
October morn.

A Lesser God

I found a lesser god
on my way upstairs;
almost tripped over him,
he was so small.

Smoking a butt of my cigarette
he found in an ashtray,
he smiled and asked
if he could stay.

I said: "Why not?'
So, I got me a god.
