Mahdy started writing poetry in 1990. The publication of his first poem in a literary magazine in the same year encouraged him to continue writing. His poems have since been published in periodicals in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Belgium, England, Finland, and Argentina.

CONTINUUM
The waves
Crash against
The shore;
The rocks sponge
The shocks.
Time pulverizes
The debris descends,
Sculpts labyrinths
For crabs' meanderings
And gulls' perchings.

On the vase,
The togaed warrior
Sat in an ornate chair,
His horse-adorned helmet
Near the chair legs,
Staring at the Adriatic--
Never suspecting that
Its ancient currents
Would one day carry
His thoughts to a world
Thousands of nautical
Years away.
