Hardwood

Our northwoods birch,
though in too soft a clime,
survived for seasons with spirit—
     its sap line girdled
     by boring
that augured ill
     and turned
     the upper branches
to brittle grasping
     fingers
     that snapped
in reaching for the clouds.

But still the dew
     settles
The wind teases,
     birds come
and there is a singing
     of remembered boughs.
