Charles Morrison

Charles attended classes in English Literature at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. His favorite poets are Bukowski, Jim Morrison, Hart Crane and William Blake. Charles looks for inspiration in the simplest things, investing them with a strange poetic energy. He tightens every perception to a focal point of clarity and extracts meaning from the most compact phrases. His love for music influences his compositions. Charles enjoys the rich tapestry of language, imagery and sound in poetry, particularly works by the French decadent poets. His poetry has appeared in the online journal “Remark.”

ROSEBUDS | PARIS, 1971

ROSEBUDS

I’ve gathered the rosebuds,
deeply inhaled their perfume,
savored the experience,
then thrown them away.
Their scent was sweet,
but not always -
sometimes angels
pissed on them
and laughed at me
when I grimaced.
But still I picked them
until they were gone;
and when I’m gone,
I hope I can
fertilize the ground
where they will grow
again.

PARIS, 1971

Surely in Paris
he would find
words of brightness
that wandered
in his darkened mind -
but they hid in gutters,
washed away in
the jaded spring rains
or were crushed
on the cobblestones,
underneath spike-heeled
boulevardiers.
Nothing bright appeared
except the glaring
whiteness of blank
paper, a mirror
of his life, empty
and full of nothing.
Inspiration fled
and he chased it
underground,
where it left him,
alone -
until he found
the only darkness
in the City of Light.
